HISTORY
Latitude 40 was founded by Andrew Anderson and Daniel DeLeeuw, both of whom have strong roots writing custom software applications for the horticulture industry where a significant portion of their business continues to develop.
First meeting in the 1990s as contractors working with Fischer USA, Inc. in Boulder, Colorado, and its German parent company, Fischer GmbH & Co Kg, Dan and Andrew worked together providing business process analysis and custom automation solutions for Fischer and others. After many years of successful projects under their belts they began to realize that they were constantly solving the same problems over and over for many of the customers who were coming their way. Novice individual developers were unreliable and irresponsible and would routinely pack up and leave one project in favor of a newer one, leaving their customers with the fallout. The incomplete portion of those projects was just as much of a problem as the quality (or lack thereof) of what was already built. This left the customer with the very tough decision between continuing with the bad product base or starting over from scratch for what always felt like a substantial loss. |
Even worse results were found while consulting for larger corporations who had most of their custom software consulting services provided by larger companies. An average success rate of around 50% was actually acceptable and was all that was ever expected. “Success” didn't even mean that the solution worked well, only that the company wasn’t completely destroyed by it and was able to cope with any new problems introduced. The other 50% were either abandoned and written off as unsuccessful projects, or forced into production causing horrible effects on the business, sometimes even driving it into bankruptcy (case in point).
It was extremely frustrating to witness this lack of knowledge and respect for the possibility of quality custom software development, both on the consultant side and the business side. The exposure to these and other common issues led to a vision of a company that could handle the responsibility of providing quality software development services without all the drawbacks and uncertainties that usually come with the attempt. Latitude 40 was eventually born and is continuously striving for such perfection. |
